The Cytologic Diagnosis of Fine Needle Aspiration on Fresh Tissue of Ovarium Tumors (Sitologi Aspirasi Jarum Halus pada Sediaan Basah Tumor Ovarium)
Ovarian tumors occur predominantly in women of the child bearing-age, mainly in their 3rd and 4th decades. In 1993, the Department of Pathology of Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya recorded 285 cases of ovarian tumors, and 199 (69.82 percent) of the cases occured in women of the childbearing age. Malignancy was observed in 61 cases (21.40 percent). Frozen section are performed for selected cases involving miligravidaes, infertility, or in cases requiring preservation of the reproductive function. Cytologic results of fine needle aspiration plays an important role in the examination of fresh tissues. The cytologic diagnosis of aspirated ovarian tissue was evaluated in this study. Results of cytologic examination was compared to the results of histopathologic examination of the parafin blocks. The study was conducted in October 1993 - September 1994 at the Department of Pathology of Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya. Results showed that 49 out of 50 specimens (98 percent) were confirmed by histopatological examination.
