Persepsi Dan Sikap Masyarakat Desa Di Kabupaten Timor Tengah Selatan Tentang Melahirkan (Attitude And Perception Of Villagers About Delivery In Timor Tengah Selatan District)
Background: In rural Timor Community (also in East Nusa Tenggara other area), have a common tradition that is heating of women (mother) vital area with smoke inside traditional house within 40 days after postpartum that called Sei. Almost all people in Timor community do this tradition earnestly and this tradition have passed down from generation to generation by all people include and do not view of education or economy level. This tradition has bad side effect to human health such as respiratory disease and pulmonary disease especially toward mother and her newborn.
Objective: The main objective of this study was to know the maternal mortality risk caused by custom and traditional maternal care.
Method: Data collected by interview used questionnaire with 230 respondent mothers who recently have a baby in last one year in Timor Tengah Selatan which took randomly.
Results: The results showed that there are values inherent in Sei Tradition which formed a group symbol
and it is an appearance from kinship among family group. This Sei tradition which took place at a traditional house makes some health problems to mother and her newborn especially in respiratory diseases, due to the bad indoor air quality circumstances inside Ume Kbubu house that not fulfill standard healthy house. This health problems could turn into worse because of local belief that mother is forbidden to consume some particular foodstuff while doing Sei tradition also there is only minimum intake of healthy foods to mother and its newborn.
Conclusion: Furthermore need do an intervention to community about effect from Sei tradition also need a modify to traditional house (Ume Kbubu) into "Healthy Ume Kbubu"
