Food Hypersensitivity as a Cause of Atopic Dermatitis
Thirty children with age variation from infancy to 12 years suffering from atopic dermatitis were evaluated for food hypersensitivity according to history, skin prick test, total eosinophil and elimination of suspected food. Sixteen (53.5 percent) experienced with other allergic of suspected food. Sixteen (53.5 percent) experienced with other allergic diseases. One of the parents of 15 (50 percent) and both parents of 3 (10.6 percent) suffered from allergic diseases. Nineteen (63.4 percent) children had atopic dermatitis triggered by food; egg accounted for 40.6 percent, fish for 52.6 percent and shrimp for 40 percent. Skin prick test were done to all children showed positive results. This study demostrated that food hypersensitivity may play a pathogenic role in some children with atopic dermatitis. Appropiate diagnosis and restriction of diet can lead to significant improvement in their skin symptoms.
