Controlled Release of Theophylline from Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose High Viscousity (Pelepasan Teofilina Secara Terkontrol dari Matriks Hidrosipropil Metilselulosa Viskositas Tinggi)
Controlled release dosage form is a dosage form with releases its contents in a controlled manner. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is a cellulose derivative which could from gel and substance may be used as matrix for a controlled release matrix dosage form. In this study, theophylline was used since this drug is suitable for controlled release dosage form and HPMC used was HPMC high viscousity with 100,000 cp. Controlled release matrices of four formulas which consisted of various amount of HPMC were prepared. Release rates of theophylline from matrices were determined by using dissolution tester with basket stirrer. The receiver media used were of pH 1.8 and of pH 7.2 and the temperature was kept constant at 37 degree celcius. Drug release from the matrices followed zero order kinetics and the mechanism were a combinations of erosion and diffusion mechanisms but the diffusion mechanism was dominant one. Release rates of the drug in media of 7.2 than those in media of pH 1.8.
