The Examination of Total Lymphocyte and Tuberculin Test in Cervical Cancer Patient (Pemeriksaan Tes Tuberkulin dan Limfosit Total pada Penderita Kanker Serviks)
Objective: To assess the immunological status of the patients with cervical cancer. Setting: Division of Oncology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia/Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta. Materials and methods: the materials of the study were the patients with cervical cancers of all stages of disease who have and received cancer therapy or regiments before hand, in the condition of reduced immunological status, and admitted for treatment from December 1995 to April 1996. The patients were injected intracutaneus PPD-5TU of 0.1 cc and taken of their blood for edge blood examination to identify the total number of lumphocyte. This study was an analytical, descriptical, descriptive study. Results: It was found that the new 90 patients were qualified. Fifty-nine patients (65 percent) were married before 18 years of age; 32 patients (33.6 percent) married more than twice. The histopathological results; 72 (80 percent) squamous cell carcinomas, 13 adenocarcinomas, and 5 adenosquamous carcinomas. Positive tubercullin was found in 38 cases (42.2 percent). Eighteen cases (69.2 percent) were of early stage, 20 cases (31.2 percent) advanced stage; 87 cases (96.7 percent) with normal total number of lymphocutes, and the rest was less than 1.200. Eleven cases with lymphocyte percentage of less than 20 had negative tuberculin test. Tuberculin test in the patients with total lymphocyte number of less than 1200 was wholly negative. Conclusions: It seemed that a decrease of functional immunological status was found in the patients with cervical cancer, although in vitro this status was still reasonably good. The further the stage of disease was, the lower the total number of lymphocyte. It appeared that the total number of lymphocytes did not correspond to immunology, but the number of lymphocyte percentage did with tuberculin test. A further study is necessary in understanding more about the prognosis.
