Antibiotics Development and its Rational Use (Perkembangan Antibiotik dan Penggunaannya yang Rasional)

Antibiotic problem is a part of drug problem in general and involves all over the world with different extent. Where as antibiotic development does not necessarily produce a real breakthrough drug. Fluoroquinolone is one of succesefull discovery which worth discussing. Meanwhile, drug resistence incessantly takes place as to require rational drug prescribing practices. The prescribed drug should have been proven through clinical trial and overall evaluation. Generally, a complete and comprehensive information about drug is limited, eventhough needed to practice rational prescribing. Antibiotics may be classified into four groups : positive gram antibiotic, negative gram antibiotic, positive gram resistant antibiotic, and negative gram resistant antibiotic. In addition, there are antibiotics with strong potency for serious infections and those with moderate potency for mild infections.
