The Impacts of Environmental Pollution on Health of the Lung (Dampak Pencemaran Lingkungan Hidup pada Kesehatan Paru)
Many environment factors can threat the quality of the air needed for healthy life. At this time, more than two billions people live in life-threatening and health threatening environments. Increased urbanization and growing industrialization have inevitably led to a series of environment-related problems, not the least of which is worsening of air quality. More than one billion city dwellers are exposed to high levels of air pollution. Indoor air pollution from open fire is the largest energy related source of ill-health. In industry, serious health risks are faced by workers. In agriculture, chemicals are widely misused. As in many other developing countries, the cause of environmental pollution in Indonesia, is rapid economical growth which led to degradation of the quality of water, soil and air. Many studies in Indonesia have shown that water, soil and air in many areas are already contaminated with toxic pollutants. The most important source of air pollution in urban areas is transportation. In Jakarta, 80 percent of all air pollutants come from transportation; industries and households account for only 20 percent of the total air pollution. Toxic pollutants can have many different effects on the respiratory tract such as irritation, damage of the epithelial cells, fibrosis which can be massive or local, allergic reaction causing constriction of the respiratory tract, allergic alveolitis and tumor of the lung.
