Suicide in Solomon Islands (Perbuatan Bunuh Diri di Kepulauan Solomon)
We studied the rate, method and other quantitave aspects of suicide and parasuicide in the Honiara area of the Solomon Islands, for the four and half year period. A suicide rate of 39/100,000 and a parasuicide rate of 36/100,000 were calculated. There were more suicides and parasuicides among the females than the males. Chloroquine poisoning was the most common method of suicide, and hanging was the only other succesful method. Female parasuicide individuals took less than, while male parasuicide individuals took more than the recognised lethal dose of chloquine, and the diffrence between the genders was statistically significant (p=0.02). The rate of suicide in the Honiara area of the Solomon islands is very low by European standards, and is of the same order as that of indigenous people of other Pacific Island nations. The area appears to be unique in that chloquine is the main method of suicide and parasuicide.
