In Vivo Survey of Resistance Chloroquine by Plasmodium falciparum at Oksibil, Irian Jaya (Penelitian In Vivo tentang Resistensi Plamodium falciparum terhadap Klorokuin di Oksibil, Irian Jaya)
Resistance to chloroquine by Plasmodium falciparum in the Oksibil region of Irian Jaya was evaluated by in vivo testing in July 1994 among 44 patients. Study subjects ranged in age from 5 to 42 years. At day 7 of the test 10 subjects (23 percent) had persistent or recurrent asexual parasitemias. Among these infections, 8 were classified RII and 2 RIII levels of resistance on the basis of the post-therapeutic course of asexual parasitemia. Thirteen subjects (30 percent) never again had an asexual parasitemia up to 28 days after therapy. All 21 other patients (47 percent) had recurrent parasitemias between days 8 and 28. These were either sensitive or RI level resistance to chloroquine. This report documents resistance to chloroquine by P. falciparum in the central highland region of Irian Jaya.
