The Changes of DNA Distribution Pattern and Thyroid Epitelial Cells Polyferase Activities on Several Types of Thyroid Neoplasms (Perbedaan Pola Distribusi Kandungan DNA serta Aktivitas Proliferasi Sel-sel Epitel Folikel Tiroid pada berbagai Jenis Neoplasma Tiroid : Analisis Flowsitometri)
Background: Abnormal DNA content and proliferative activity of tumor has been considered as an additional criteria for determining the biological behavior of a tumor. In order to differientiate the adenomatous, adenoma and carcinomas of the thyroid, DNA distribution pattern and the fraction of cell in synthesis phase of cell were studied. Methods : Flowcytometric DNA analysis was done on 71 patients of adenomatous goiter, adenoma and carcinomas of the thyroid gland encountered during an 8 year period between 1985 and 1992. Tumor tissue were sampled from paraffin-embedded blocks. The histopathological diagnosis were based on the WHO criteria. There were 57 cases of thypoid neoplasm, consisting of 18 fallicular adenoma (FTA), 19 follicular carcinoma (FTC), 14 papillary (PTC) and 6 undifferetiated carcinoma (UTC). Fourteen cases of adenomatous goiter (G) were also studies as controle. Results : Aneuploid DNA cell lines of FTA (16.60 percent of cases), FTC (21.05 percent of cases) and PTC (7.14 percent of cases) were observed. All of undifferentiated thyroid carcinoma (6 cases) showed diploid pattern of DNA content. S-phase fraction in FTA is higher than in adenomatous goiter and lower than those in thyroid carcinomas. They were no significant differences between the percentage of S-phase cells of G, FTA, PTC and UTC. Conclusions. Although the DNA measurement prowed useful for predicting the biologic behavior of aneuploid patients, there were no significant differences between abnormal DNA content of adenomatous goiter, adenoma and carcinomas of the thyroid.
