Diagnosis and Management of Diphtheria (Diagnosis dan Penatalaksanaan Difteri)
Diphteria is an acute infection of the upper respiratory tract or skin caused by toxin-producing Corynebacterium diphtheria. It is characterized by a formation of pseudo membrane in the infection sites and a toxic reaction involving primarily the heart and peripheral nerves. The organism usually gains entry through the respiratory tract is mainly spread by respiratory droplet from patients or carriers. Diphtheria is found worldwide and in unimmunized population. It is a diseases of children. The mortality is high, especially in complicated cases. Early diagnosis and diphtheria antitoxin administration are of great important in the management of the disease. Diphtheria can be prevented by immunization. The family physicians have important role in the establishment of early diagnosis as well as in the prevention of diphtheria through immunization.
