Ascariasis and Anemia on Primary School Children in Northern Part of Jakarta (Askariasis dan Anemia pada Anak Sekolah Dasar di Jakarta Utara)
This study was only a small part of the study entiting 'The impact of ascariasis treatment and health education on the nutritional and cognitive status of primary school children'. The study was done on primary schools which were located in subdistrict Lagoa, district Koja and madrasah primary school at district Pademangan, northern part of Jakarta. The study samples were school children of grade I, II and III. Stool examinations were done by means of Kato-Katz in Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia. For epidemiological and sosio-economical surveys, data collections were carried out by means of questionaire and interview. For hemoglobin examination, cyanmethaemoglobin method was used, and for serum ferritin determination, Radio-Immuno-Assay method was applied and was done in makmal laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia. The results of parasitological examination showed that the prevalence of ascariasis in primary school (PS) 01 was 49.1 percent, PS 02 62.6 percent, PS 05 63.3 percent, PS 07 72.6 percent and PS Madrasah 49.1 percent. The results of epidemiological survey showed that the hind of latrines used consisted of 27.4 percent common latrines, 71.9 percent private latrines and 0.7 percent river, from the 281 families surveyed. Concerning drinking water, there were 24.2 percent who bought water, 74.0 percent consumed tap water, and 1.4 percent got their water from their wells whereas only 0.4 percent who took their water from water pumps. The results of hemoglobin examination showed that out of 268 children, 56.3 percent got anemia. It seemed that from those who had anemia, only 20.9 percent were due to iron deficiency, the rest might be due to other factors. Ferritin examination showed 33.1 percent who had ferritin concentration below 12 ug/l.
