Neonatal Tetanus : Reports of Several Therapeutic Measures (Tetanus Neonatorum : Laporan berbagai Cara Pengobatan)
The Indonesian household survey in 1986 has shown that neonatal tetanus is one of the main causes of infant mortality, besides diarrhea and upper respiratory tract infection. Immunization against tetanus in pregnant women has managed to significantly reduce the morbidity, nevertheless in developing countries, the mortality from tetanus is still high, around 80-90 percent. The management of cases treated in Gunung Wenang General Hospital during the period of 1976-1994 is reported. The severity of each case is graded according to a scoring system. The modalities are differentiated into 6 basic therapeutic measures : oral diazepam, high dose diazepam, aminophyllin, rectal diazepam, and more recently piridoxin. These therapeutic measures have shown excellent results. Apart from these medications, parents also participate by learning how to perform airway suction. To decrease the morbidity and mortality due to neonatal tetanus, immunization and other preventive measures at the primary health care level should be seriously supported.
