Leek and Metabolism : 6. Protection on Rat Liver Intoxicated with CCl4 : Enzymatic Aspect (Bawang Prei dan Metabolisme : 6. Proteksi terhadap Hati Tikus yang Keracunan CCl4 : Kajian Enzimatik)
In another experiment, we have demonstrated that garlic protected rat liver against CCl4 intoxication, indicated by low levels of plasma GPT activity of rats receiving garlic extract and CCl4. As leek is a member of Allium genus, it could posses the same action as garlic. A group of nine rats were treated with 0.275 mg CCl4/g body weight in a single dose and the plasma GPT activities were determined 24 hours later, which increased as much as four times than the normal concentration. If the leek extract was administered orally for eight days with a daily dose an amount equivalent to 10 g leek/kg body weight prior to CCl4 treatment, plasma GPT activity remained practically identical with plasma GPT activity of a control group, receiving only a standard diet. It is concluded that leek might contain substance (s) which protected the rat liver from CCl4 intoxication.
