The Type of Dermatophytosis Case in a Private Practice at Bandung (Jenis Kasus Dermatofitosis pada Salah Satu Praktik Swasta di Bandung)
Dermatophytosis are caused by a closely related group of fungi, dermatophytes, that invades only superficial keratinized tissue. Laboratory diagnosis are usually performed with direct examination and cultivation. The examination can be done either at small laboratory or at reference laboratory. We had performed microscopic examination (10 percent KOH and Lactophenol cotton blue wet mount) and culture (Sabouraud dextrose agar media plus chloramphenicol) of skin scraping of dermatophytosis patients at a private practice in Bandung. Furhter incubation of the cultures took place at Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, Padjadjaran University in Bandung. This study was carried out during the period of September to December 1991. The purpose of this study is to know dermatophytosis cases and to determine the etiologic agent. The study cases consisted of 61 consecutive patients aged 8 to 60 years with dermatophytosis. Based on pathological lesions diagnosis were established : Tinea corporis (47.54 percent), T. cruris (37.70 percent), T. corporis et cruris (6.55 percent), corporis et cruris + T. barbae (1.63 percent), T. corporis at barbae (1.63 percent), T. manuum (3.27 percent), and T. pedis (1.68 percent). A total of 69 cultures were examined. Forty six had positive evidence of dermatophyte infection of the skin samples on cultures. The strains of dermatophyte as follows : Trichophyton rubrum 23 strain, T. mentagrophytes 19 strain, T. tonsurans 1 strain, T. verrucosum 1 strain, Microsporum canis 1 strain, and Epidermophyton floccosum 6 strain.
