The Effect of Oral Contraceptive Use on the Frequency of Cervicitis due to Chlamydia Tracomatis in the Prostitutes (Pengaruh Pemakaian Pil Kontrasepsi Oral pada Frekuensi Servisitis karena Chlamydia Trachomatis pada Para Wanita Tuna Susila di Resosialisasi Sanggrahan Yogyakarta)
The use of contraceptive pills has been known capable to induce a cervical mucous alteration, namely ectropion. Cervical ectropion is a risk factor for Chlamydia trachomatis infection. However, the correlation between contraceptive pill usage and chlamydial cervicitis remains unclear. A cross sectional study was conducted among female prostitutes, as they represented a high risk group for chlamydial infection. Chlamydial cervicitis was diagnosed by gram staining and immunochromatography of C. trachomatis lipopolysaccharide antigens. The results showed that the frequency of chlamydial cervicitis among pill users was significantly higher than the non-pill users (p less than 0.05), with prevalence ratio of 2.12. In conclusion, the use of oral pills is a risk factor for chlamydial cervicitis. The effect of oral contraceptive on the other sexually transmitted diseases due to cervical ectropion needs further clarification.
