The Prosentage of HBsAg(+) and Anti HCV(+)/HBsAg(-) on Blood Donor Preparate at Bandung Indonesia Red Cross (Persentase HBsAg(+) dan Anti HCV(+)/HBsAg(-) pada Persediaan Darah Donor di PMI Cabang Kotamadya Bandung)
Hepatitis B and C are endemic in Indonesia. They could become chronic diseases and some of them could become liver cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. In order to detect tranfusion-borne diseases in donors' blood, Bandung Indonesian Red Cross has conducted screening test of HBsAg on every bag of blood received, besides the examination of VDRL and anti-HIV, but anti-HCV has only been examined randomizedly due to insufficient budget and lack of government regulation. Hence, the blood with negative result of HBsAg but its anti-HCV or virus has not been examined yet which be given to recipients, could endanger them. With the aboves background, a preliminary retrospective study was performed to the results of HBsAg and anti-HCV examinations on blood received by Bandung Indonesia Red Cross. The data of laboratory results from April until August 1995 was collected. HBsAg screening test was done on 21, 425 bags of blood, and the positive results of HBsAg were 402 (1.87 percent). On examination of HBsAg and anti-HCV which was performed simultanously, 39 out of 1,837 (2.12 percent) of positive anti-HCV, they had also the result of negative HBsAg. One out of 1.837 (0.05 percent) of positive anti-HCV had the result of positive HBsAg. Due to 80-90 percent of post-transfusion hepatitis (PTH) here caused by Viral Hepatitis C, it is imperative to perform anti-HCV examination on all bags of blood, although it is expensive, but it can dicrease the new PTH cases. The screening test which was performed used EIA method. HBsAg was examined by Hepanostika (organon teknika) and Auszyme (Abbot laboratories) anti HCV was examined by UBI HCV EIA 4.0 (Roche laboratories).
