A Strategy of Local Area Monitoring on Mother and Child Health in Order to Increases of Safe Motherhood Effort in East Java (Tindak Lanjut Pemantauan Wilayah Setempat (PWS)-KIA dalam Meningkatkan Upaya 'Safe Motherhood' di Jawa Timur)
To improve mother and child health services, a strategy local area monitoring (LAM) on mother and child (MCH) activities was conducted by the health services with the coordination of local administration and the community. The components of MCH-LAM (PWS-KIA) are K1, first contact of pregnant women in first trimester, K4, two times contact in the third trimester, high risk pregnancy detection by the community, high risk pregnancy detection by the health workers, deliveries assisted by health workers (midwives) and reach outs of of neonates. Out of the targets set only K1 was satisfactory, it was achieved by 78.4 percent of the regencies, for the other components the achievements were low, K4 targets achieved by 13.5 percent of the regencies, high risk pregnancies detection by the community by 10.8 percent of the regencies, high risk pregnancies detection by health workers 29.7 percent, deliveries assisted by health workers 18.9 percent and coverage of neonates by 10.8 percent of the regencies. Ten strategies were put forward to improve the performance of the health services, such as training of cadres to recognise pregnancies and highrisk criterias. Training of health workers on how to use WHO partographs and do home visits in order to increase deliveries assisted by health workers. PKK leaders at the province level are requested to motivate high risk pregnant women to seek professional assistance for their deliveries.
