Gambaran Kadar Hemoglobin pada Penderita Filariasis di Desa Polewali, Kecamatan Bambalamotu, Kabupaten Mamuju Utara, Sulawesi Barat
Filariasis (elephantiasis) is an infectious disease caused by the filarial worm infections ,which live in the channels and lymph nodes. Filariasis causes an acute and chronic symptoms and transmitted by various species of mosquitoes. Microfilariae live in the blood stream and lymph vessels and until now there has not been clear the source ofnutrients of microfilariae, whether from lymphatic fluid or red blood cells.
The Research was conducted to determine the haemoglobin level in the population and whether its related to filariasis in the village of Polewali, sub-district of Bambalamotu, district of North Mamuju, West Sulawesi Province. This research used survey method with adescriptive approach, with 80 people participated on the research. Capillary blood samples were checked by microscopic method with Giemsa staining. Haemoglobin was checked by using a hemoglobin meters (BeneCheck ®). Thick blood examination showed that seven people (8.75%) were positive for microfilariae of Brugia malayi where six of them were males with an average hemoglobin 12.68 g/dL and one female with an average of Haemoglobin of 12.7 g/dL.
The results showed thad there was no difference in Hb levels between people with positive and negative microfilariae. It can be concluded that there was no difference in Hb between residents with microfilariae positive and negative , and no need for the addition of iron to patients with filariasis.
