Suplementasi Astaxanthin Menurunkan Kadar Malondialdehid Lensa Penderita Katarak Senilis (Astaxanthin Supplementation Reduce Lens Malondialdehyde of Senile Cataract)
ABSTRACT
Oxidative stress and free radical formation occur chronically in human crystalline lens induce the production of molondioldehyde. Malondialtiehyde is known to cause degeneration of the protein to form cataract. Astaxanthin is an antioxidant that can reduce levels of malondialdehyde. The objective of this study is to prove the effect of astaxanthin supplementation to reduce the levels of malondialdehyde in crystalline lens of senile cataract patients. A posttest only control group design was performed in two groups, astoxonthin and control. Each group consisted of 16 samples, with homogenicity test was performed on the variables of age, sex, and cataract grading. Astoxon thin groups received 4 mg ostaxanthin supplementation and the control group received a placebo for 14 days prior to cataract surgery. Lens nuclei were collected for subsequent measured levels of malondialdehyde. This study showed that astaxanthin group did lower the molondialdehyde (mean=50,315 nmol/mg) in a higher levels than the control group (mean=50,808 nmollmg)after 14 days of supplementation. The difference was statistically significant (p=0,001). Astaxanthin supplementation can reduce the levels ofmolondialdehyde in crystalline lens of senile cataract patients.
