Prevalensi Malaria pada Anak Usia Sekolah di Waigete, Sikka, Indonesia (Malaria Prevalence among School-age Children in Waigete, Sikka, Indonesia)
ABSTRACT
Background: Malaria is still endemic in most of the areas in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is To determine the prevalence of malaria among school-age children (5- 14 years) at Egon village, Waigete. and to collect data iegarding the clinical symptoms in malaria patients.
Methods: This study was a cross-sectionat study performed in three elementary schools in Egon village, Waigete territory, Sikka region. The population of this study was all elementary school students in grade I - VI from SD Pigan Bekor, SDK Waigete, and SD Blidit. The students were asked about recent complaints and their peripheral blood were examined to diagnose malaria.
Result: In samples from 493 students, 29 students (5.88%) had Plasmodium falciparum malaria. The positive blood samples were only found in SD Blidit In those 29 samples, 4 samples were garnets, 16 samples were 4-1 parasite density, 8 samples were ++ parasite density and 1 sample was ++ parasite density. All positive samples were not accompanied by recent complaints nor clinical symptoms.
Conclusion: Malaria cases were only found at SD Blidit. All students with positive samples did not have complaints nor clinical symptoms. In endemic malaria areas, microscopic blood examination should be considered as routine examination irrespective of clinical symptoms.
