Tata Laksana Diabetes Melitus saat Puasa Ramadhan (Management at Diabetes Mellitus on Ramadhan Fasting)
ABSTRACT
It is estimated that there are 40-50 million people with diabetes (called as diabetics) worldwide fasting during Ramadhan every year. A large epidemiological study, EPIDIAR (Epidemiology of Diabetes and Ramadhan) conducted in 13 Islamic countries on 12,243 diabetic individuals who fasted during Ramadhan showed 43% of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and 79% of patients with type 2 diabetes fasted during Ramadhan. Diabetics had major potential complications associated with fasting such as hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia with or without ketoacidosis and dehydration. Five important things are (1) individual management; (2) regular blood glucose monitoring; (3) diet should not differ from the daily nutritional requirements; (4) no excessive sports, and (5) the patient must know when to break the fast.
