Malaria Plasmodium knowlesi (Malaria Plasmodium knowlesi)
ABSTRACT
Plasmodium knowlesi has been recognized since 1932 as a parasite that causes malaria in monkey. There have been numerous reports of naturally acquired infections of Plasmodium knowlesi in human in Southeast Asia. Natural infections in human frequently diagnosed as Plasmodium malariae because they are microscopically similar. The most characteristic symptom is fever occuring every 24 hours (quotidian fever). Plasmodium knowlesi could cause severe disease with possible mortality. The latest WHO malaria treatment guidelines (2011) do not discussed treatment for Plasmodium knowlesi. Some clinical studies have been using chloroquine and primaquine combination, the same treatment for Plasmodium malariae, with good response.
