Coconut Shell Media Use As-Medium To Reduce Levels Of Bod (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) And Cod (Chemical Oxygen Demand) In Household Wastewater, 2013
ABSTRACT
Treatment of domestic wastewater ( domestic sewage) can be done in various ways, one of which is the process by biofilter method. In this study the use of coconut shell filter media. Selection of media use in the study of coconut shell coconut shell because it's cheap, and easy to be in the traditional markets in both urban and rural, compared with a honeycomb of plastic media that are expensive and difficult to obtain. Coconut shell media is strong and has an extensive surface can be a place for the growth of microorganisms decomposing. This type of experimental research, which aims to determine the effectiveness of using coconut shell media in domestic wastewater treatment with the biofilter decreased levels of BOD and COD . From the results of the BOD levels after treatment using coconut shell media appears there was a concomitant decrease in the duration of stay . With a residence time of 36 hours to reach 72.35 % decline. While the levels of COD after treatment by using coconut shell media seen no reduction reached 66.66 %for a residence time of 36 hours. The residence time is effective in decreasing levels of BOD and COD was 24 hours, because it can reduce BOD and COD levels below standards / regulations . Anaerobic biofilter with coconut shell media has been proven to reduce BOD and COD levels in domestic wastewater in accordance with the quality standards that have been set by Jakarta Governor Decree no. 122 of 205 concerning the management of domestic wastewater in Jakarta.
