Praktik Pemberian ASI Eksklusif dan Karakteristik Demografi : Studi Kasus Di Propinsi Jawa Barat, Sumatera Barat dan Nusa Tenggara Timur (The Practice of Exclusive Breastfeeding and Character Demografic : Case Studi in The Province of West Java, West Sumatra and East Nusa Tenggara)
Background. Many studies have shown that exclusive breastfeesing can maintain the survival of infants health. Therefore WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding for six months. But the reality on the ground, only a small proportion of mothers exclusively breastfeeding. Objection; study the factors that affect the practice of exclusive breastfeeding to six months.
Method; this research is descriptive design using crossectional. Respondent were mothers who had children ages 6-12 months. Random selection of respondents and totaled 1884 respondents. Research conducted in 2006 in three provinces namely; West Java, West Sumatra and East Nusa Tenggara. Data collected include; socio economic, socio demographics, breast feeding, pralaktal, place of birth, helper of birth delivering and giving colostrum. Data analysis was performed descriptively and analytically by making a frequency distribution tables, later in the test using the square khi kuadrat.
Results; the proportion of breastfeeding practices in three provinces still low of west Java was at 19,2, West Sumatra 19,4% and east nusa tenggara 8,9%. Obtained when analyzed several determinants associated with the practice of exclusive breastfeeding is; the mother lived in the district, the mothers does not work, giving of colostrum and relief deliveries by trained midwives and healers. Most of the information obtained over 80% of respondent are not working only as housewives as much as 74,4 % of respondents in West Java and 76.8% of respondents in West Sumatra baby delivering process were helperd delivery by health personnel. While in East Nusa Tenggara more than 65,4% helperd by health workers and traditional skilled helper.
