Kolonisasi Candida dalam Rongga Mulut (Candida colonization in the oral cavity)
Candida albicans is an opportunistic-pathogen fungus which cause a variety of diseases in human, such as oral thrush, skin lesion, vulvovaginitis and gastrointestinal candidiasis. The oral cavity's mucous is a good habitat for the growth of micro-organisms. It is due to the ecological environment which support colonization, including the Candida. Several steps of Candida colonization in the oral cavity are first acquisition, growth stability and attachment and finally, penetration to the oral epithelial. The growth stability and attachment depends on the volume and pH of saliva, temperature and glucose content. Succesfull colonization depends on the attachment to the epithelial cells. The Candida virulence armamentarium is complex, including adhesion and invasion to penetrate the epitelium which play a role in the infection and the dissemination. The phenotypic changes from the yeast to fifamentous form and the biofilm formation is important, since it defends from the host immune mrchanism.
