Dukungan Keluarga pada Pasien Stroke di Ruang Saraf RSUP Dr. Kariadi Semarang (The family support to stroke patients in neurology ward Dr. Kariadi Hospital Semarang

Background : Data from Health Department of Central Java Province in 2005 shows th at Semarang has highest incidence of stroke, which has 4516 cases (17,36%), compared to all incidence in other cities. The important of family support to help healing process and rehabilitation is highly required. Thus the aim of the study was to determine the various kind of the family to support the patients with stroke.
Methods: Qualitative study with phenomenological method was used. The subjects were the family of patients with stroke hospitalized at Neurology ward Dr. Kariadi hospital. Subjects were taken by purposive sampling. Five people of the core family of stroke patiens were enrolled in the study. The data was collected by in-depth interviewed and the problem analysis was conducted. Results: The family mem ber were able to give various kind of support such as information support, emotional, instrumental and achievement support. Not all respondents revealed the real condition to the patients. But they gave the emotional support by taking care of the patients, instrumental support was by providing rehabilitation therapy and achievement support by showing gratitude and compliments.
Conclusion: The supports that were given by family are informational, emotional, instrumental, and achievement supports.
