Pityriasis versicolor is a worldwide superficial fungal infection with incidence rate of 50% of Western Samoa, 1,1% in the Sweden dan approximately 2-8% of the population in United States. Galangal (Alpinia galanga Linn) rhizome is herb which have antifungal effect.Ketoconazole is an effective antifungal agent for the treatment of P. versicolor. The purpose of the study was to compare the antifungal effect of extract galangal with ketoconazole 2% against Malassezia furfur isolate. This was an experimental study with completely randomized design of 8 groups, divided into different concentrations of 0%; 0,5%; 1%; 1,5%; 2%; 2,5%; 3% and
ketoconazole 2%. The antifungal effect on galangal extract to inhibit M. furfur. was 0,5% 48,89% inhibitory effect. The effective concentration was 1% concentration extract of galangal with 79,70% inhibitory effect. The Kruskal Wallis test showed p=0,001 and the Mann Whitney test got 4 groups showed that no differences (p>0,05) and 17 groups showed differences in inhibitory percentage (p
