Feeeding Healthy Infants Born by Ceasarean Delivery on Breastmilk Combined with Probiotic-Containing Formula Effects on Their Body Weight Gain
During the past three decades the incidence of cesarean delivery has increased. Although the cesarean delivery is commonly safe, the alteration of the intestinal flora of infants born by cesarean delivery may increase the incidence of diseases during monates, which will affect the infants body weight gain. The effects of probiotic-containing formula on the weigh gain of infants born by cesarean delivery are still debatable and need to be further explored. The objective of this reserch is to find out the difference of weight gain since birth until 4 weeks of age of the babies who received breastmilk combined with probiotic-containing formula. Clinical trial phase II with randomized open label method was performed from November 2009 to October 2010 on 96 babies born at term by cesarean delivery, single born, and birth weight ≥ 2500 g. The 96 babies were devided into two random group. The first group (n=45), for 4weeks since birth, received breastmilk contbined with probiotic-containing formula. The duration of the breastfeeding, the amount of the formula, and weight gain were noted every day and the body weight was measured at birth and at 4 weeks of age. A statistical analysis was conducted by using repeated measured ANOVA to find out the difference of weight gain. The result shows that compared with control, the infants receiving breastmilk combined with probiotic-containing formula show no significant weight gain (p>0.05). in conclusion, the probiotic-containing formula has no significant effect on the infants weight gain
