Nutritional Status and Mental Function of Elderly in Panti Werda H, South Jakarta (Status Gizi dan Status Mental Manula di Panti Werda H Jakarta Selatan)
A decline of mental functions in the aging brain should not be considered as a general or even necessary phenomena. On the contrary, the loss of function is usually associated with specific areas of the brain and do not necessarily affect the ordinary of life. With advancing age, the number of neurotransmitters (NT) required for the different metabolic processes will decrease like most of the other components. Synthesis of NT is pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) and thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) dependent, while Ca ion is necessary as a mediator, both vitamin B6 are essential nutrients for the general cognitive functions. The objective of this research is to study the mental condition of instituationalized elderly persons and its affecting factors. Preliminary findings show a decline in vitamin B6, vitamin B1 and calcium status in more than 80 percent of our material together with a flattened emotional state and a mini mental state score equivalent to a depressive reaction. However, still more work is necessary to explain the low vitamin status.
