Home-made Ligator for Endoscopic Ligation of Essophageal Varices
Ruptured esophageal varices has been recognized as the most frequent cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding, particulary in developing countries. It is found approximately in 30% of patients with major upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage and the mortality rates ranges about 15% to 40%. Most patients who have cirrhosis develop varices, but only one third of them experiences variceal bleeding. The risk of variceal bleeding within 2 years is approximately 20-35% following the esophageal varices, and the risk of dying due to the initial variceal bleedings increases up to 50%.
Treatment of variceal bleeding was one of the most controversial subjects in medicine including sclerotherapy, obliterative angiothereapy, operation and ligation. Nowdays, there are a lot of treatment that can stop variceal bleeding. The best current treatment for rupture of esophageal varices are endoscopic esophageal varices ligation (EVL) and endoscopic sclerotherapy (EST).
