Aplikasi Teknik Analisis Aktivasi Neutron dalam Investigasi Sumber Pencemaran Partikulat Udara Halus
Air quality in several cities in Indonesia has degraded in the last two decades, due to the increasing of urbanization and economic activities. The degradation of air quality occurs because of the anthropogenic source such as industry emissions, motor vehicles emission etc has exceed the environment ‘s burden capacity. Fine particulate matter PM2.5 (particulate with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 mm) is a main parameter that has significant impact on human health since it can penetrates deep into the lung and heart system. In this paper, the monitoring activities and comprehensive studies that were carried out since 2000 continuously in Bandung are reported. Neutron activation analysis was applied to characterize the particulate matter since it has selectivity, high sensitivity, simultaneous, and has detection limit up to nanogram. In this paper, the investigation of pollutant source in fine particulate matter using statistical method based on mathematics model and physics phenomena approach such as Positive Matrix Factorization is also discussed. NAA technique determined over 20 different elements in airborne particulate matter samples. The pollutant sources that identified were seven sources, they are biomass burning, soil, motor vehicle emission, secondary sulfur, two stroke engine, sea salts and windblown soil. Further step analysis, the results will be correlated with meteorological data to identify the source location, from local and regional (transboundary pollution).
