Progress in the Chemotherapy of Leprosy (Perkembangan Pengobatan Lepra)

Treatment is an important aspect of leprosy control. Effective chemotherapy not only cures the patients, but also disrupts the transmission of infection. Development of chemotherapy of leprosy can be divided into three eras : presulfon, sulfon monotherapy, and multidrug therapy (MDT) era. This paper reviews the development of leprosy chemotherapy and drugs used in MDT : dapson, rifampisin, clofazimin, ethionamid/protionamide. New drugs recently developed : fluoroquinolone, minocycline, and clarithromycine, and some alternatives combined regimens are also discussed.
