Leek (Allium fisultosum Linn) and Metabolism : 8. Prevention of the Decreasing of SH-Group Containing Compounds Concentration in the Plasma of CCl4 Intoxicated Rats (Bawang prei (Allium fistulosum Linn) dan Metabolisme : 8. Pencegahan Penurunan Kandungan Total Senyawa-SH dalam Plasma Tikus CCl4 oleh Sari Air Bawang Prei)
We have reported previously that leek could inhibit the-SH group containing compounds depletion in rat liver intoxicated with CCl4. In this report, we present the effect of leek administration on the level of-SH group containing compounds in plasma of rats, intoxicated with CCl4, as compared to the level of these compounds in the plasma of normal rats and of CCl4 intoxicated rats. A number of rats were divided randomly into three groups. The first group received only a standard diet. The second group was treated only eight a single dose of CCl4 0.55 mg/g body weight. The third group received a pretreatment of leek extract for eight day, with a daily dose of 20 g leek/kg body weight and 0.55 mg CCl4/g body weight on day 8. Forty eights hours after CCl4 administration, rats were sacrified and blood were collected for GPT activity and for the determination of-SH group containing compounds concentration. The level of-SH group containing compounds in the plasma of the first group of rats was found to be identical to that of the third group, whereas a significantly lower values was obtained from the second group. We concluded that CCl4 reduced the level of-SH group containing compounds in rat plasma and that leek has the potentials to maintain the normal concentration of these compounds in plasma.
