Leek (Allium fistulosum Linn) and Metabolism : 9. Decrease the Lipid Peroxide Contents in the Liver of CCl4 Intoxication Rat Caused by the Free Radicals (Bawang prei (Allium fistulosum Linn) dan Metabolisme: 9. Penghambat Kenaikan Kandungan Peroksida Lipid Hati karena Radikal Bebas pada Tikus yang Diracuni CCl4)
This observation was conducted to investigated the anility of leek to prevent liver damage by free radicals formed in CCl4 intoxication. Twenty one rats were devided randomly in three groups of equal numbers. The first group, seved as a normal control group, received no treatment. The second groups was intoxicated with a single dose 0.55 mg CCl4/g body weight. The rats of the third group, after the administration of leek water extract in a dose equivalent to 20 g leek/kg body weight for 8 days successively, were intoxicated with an equal dose of CCl4. Forty eight hours after the administration of CCl4, the rats killed. GPT activities were determined in plasma, lipid peroxide contents, formed in the presence of free radicals in CCl4 intoxication, were determined in liver homogenates. This study showed that CCl intoxication, increased significantly the lipid peroxide content in the liver. Administration of leek water extract decreased the lipid peroxide content in the liver of CCl4 intoxication rats. Its suggested that leek contained substances which could reduce free radicals formation in CCl4 intoxication.
