To evaluate allergic and irritative effects of 64 decorative cosmetic products, a study using patch test was conducted on 205 volunteers comprising of 78 persons having been in frequent contact or having been brought into contact (2 weeks previously) and 127 persons who had little or no contact with the tested products. Patch test on the back of volunteers were carried out for decorative cosmetic products in their original form (RSIS) and concentration as found on the market. The patch test was performed according to the standard method of the International Contact Dermatitis Research Group (ICDRG) using Finn Chamber on Scanpor from Epitest Ltd Coy, Finland. The results obtained from 201 volunteers showed that an allergic reaction was found in one volunteer only (0.49 percent) which was to one decorative cosmetic product only, dark yellow eye shadow. Low grade irritation was found in 20 of the decorative cosmetic products tested, 15 of these were of very low frequency (0.49 percent) while the remaining 5 were of a 0.99 percent frequency. It can be concluded that the decorative cosmetic products tested in this study are hypo-allergic cosmetic with low degree of irritation. However, the author would like to stress that persons with hypersensitive skin should use decorative cosmetic products with care and if needed a repeated open application test (ROAT) should be performed prior to routine use.
