Leukoplakia Hairy in Progressive HIV Infection (Leukoplakia Hairy pada Infeksi HIV yang Progresif)
Oral hairy leukoplakia is a complication of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection as an early sign of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). This leukoplakia, frequently seen at the lateral border of the tongue, is the oral manifestation of AIDS which indicates an oral progressive HIV infection towards AIDS. This lesion is associated with Epstein Bar Virus which can spread rapidly in population groups of homosexuals, intravenous drug users, hemophiliac patients, people committing free heterosexual life, and through blood transfusion. In these high risk groups, the replication of the virus is influenced by HIV immunosupression. The diagnosis is based on clinical, laboratory, and microscopic characteristics, such as hairy rough white patches at the lateral border of the tongue in persons with positive HIV antibody and also balloon degeneration of spinous cells. In borderline cases, the diagnosis is established by the presence of EBV in Southhern Blot Hibridization.
