Clinical Application of Oral Cytological Examination to Detection of Malignancy (Aplikasi Klinis Pemeriksaan Sirologik Mulut untuk Deteksi Keganasan)
The incidence of oral cancers ranges between 2-5 percent of all cancerous lesions, which has the tendency to increase each year. Almost 60 percent of all oral cancer patients are found in an advanced stage. Actually, death caused by oral cancer can be prevented by earlier detection. One simple method of examination which can be done before performing biopsy, is the oral cytological examination. Nevertheless, the clinical application of this examination needs sufficient knowledge of several conditions which need or may not need oral cytological examination. Hopefully, dentists can play a more important role in earline detection of oral cancers by performing cytological examination of suspicious or non-suspicious lesions which constitute the beginning of malignancy.
