Folic Acid Level and Vitamin B12 on Chronic Renal Failure Patient (Kadar Asam Folat dan Vitamin B12 pada Penderita Gagal Ginjal Kronik)

Chronic renal failure is still the problem in the world. The problem in the developed countries is not similar to the developing countries like Indonesia. There are numbers of chronic renal failure patients found in Indonesia especially in Jakarta recently. Lots of factors caused this chronic renal failure. Haemodialysis/HD is still one of the best treatments to these patients besides kidney transplantation, but this action causes some complications like the decreasing of folic acid level and some other side effects. This research aims to investigate the change of folic acid level and vitamine B12 on chronic renal failure post haemodialysis by giving 20 mg folic acid/day. This research was done to 50 chronic renal failure patients without HD, 20 chronic renal failure patients post HD by giving supplement of 20 mg folic acid/day and vitamine B12 2 Ug tablets Unicaps M during 24-36 weeks. Twenty renal patients without renal failure were used as patients of control group. Toward erythrocyt and serum as well as vitamine B12 in competitive protein binding/CPB way used vitamine B12/folic acid kit dual compound Amersham CT 301. From this research the deficiency of folic acid toward this two group of chronic renal failure (compare to control group) is still uncertain. Erythrocyt folic acid to chronic renal failure group (nt = 208/ng/ml) is lower than the control group (nt = 504 ng/ml) (p less than 0.05). The same case found to chronic renal failure post HD group (nt = 407 ng/ml). Serum folic acid level to chronic renal failure (nt = 4.2 ng/ml) has the same level with serum folic acid post HD. Serum folic acid level to chronic renal failure without HD as well as to chronic renal failure patients post HD is higher compared to conrol group (351 pg/ml). The level of serum vitamine B12 to chronic renal failure group (865 pg/ml) and chronic renal failure post HD (1048 pg/ml) is higher compared to conrol group (351 pg/ml). To get the reference value of serum and erythrocyt folic acid as well as vitamine B12 serum for Indonesians, further research is still needed to be done.
