Ampicillin Treatment in Typhoid Fever (Ampicillin pada Demam Typhoid)
This study is a prospective study, treating typhoid fever with AMPICILLIN. The trial had been drawn from 66 cases with pyrexias seven days to two weeks and G.I. tract symptoms during the period March 1989 through December 1990. We confirmed the diagnosis of typhoid fever in 48 cases (81,8 percent) consist of 42 cases S.typhi and 4 cases S. paratyphi A. There were 29 males and 7 females. The age varies from 18 years to 55 years (mean : 28,1). AMPICILLIN with average dose 4 gr per day were given in 4 divided doses for 14 days treatment. We found 6 cases hypersensitive to AMPICILLIN and in 2 cases in vitro resistant to AMPICILLIN. There were 2 cases with intestinal perforations during the trial. All these 8 cases were with from the trial. We complete the 14 days treatment with AMPICILLIN in 28 cases. We found sustained fever in 2 cases until the 14th day treatment and considered that as a treatment failure (7 percent). On the remainder 26 cases the temperature subsided to normal within 5 days to 13 days treatment (mean first afebrile day : 8.8). Beside 2 cases with intestinal perforations as complications, we found 5 cases with melena and in other 2 cases with severe toxemia. Steroid were only reserved for the toxemias. All cases showed unevenintful remissions. There were no death.
