Postnatal Growth of Infant between 0-2 Years of Age in Tanjungsari, West Java (Pertumbuhan Postnatal Bayi 0-2 Tahun di Pedesaan Tanjungsari, Jawa Barat)
A longitudinal survey was conducted in subdistrict Tanjungsari to study postnatal growth of infants, from 0-2 years of age. The birth cohort were the pregnancy outcomes of a pregnancy cohort born during the period of January 1, 1988-December 31, 1989. Subject were all singleton and live-born infants. Out of 4,108 singletons, anthropometric measurements of 3,813 liveborn infants who were eligible for the study were collected. The infants were classified as normal birth weight (more than or equal to 2,500 g), small for gestational age (SGA) and appropriate for gestational age (AGA). Because most women don't know the first day of the last menstrual period, assessment for gestational age was using the Ballard Score. Follow-up of these infants shows that all groups of infants had higher increases in body measurements until 6 months of postnatal age, than the growth curves slows down. Low birth weight infants did not show the expected catch-up growth, their postnatal growth curves remains, consistently under normal birth weights infants for the intire years of postnatal observation. The conclusions are the following; postnatal growth of low birth weight in Tanjungsari did not show sufficient catch up growth. Low birth weight infants remain smaller for all anthropometric measurements compared to infants with normal birth weight. In the study are, risk factors such as postnatal nutrition and infection may play a role in this pattern of postnatal growth.
