Occupational Safety through the Prevention Effort of Mental Organic Disorder (Keselamatan Kerja dalam Upaya Mencegah Gangguan Mental Organik)
The rights to receive occupational safety and health are guaranteed by law in Indonesia. Failure to perform occupational safety causes accidents and injuries, especially those that can results in acute and chronic mental disorders. Accidents can be explained by the agent-host-environment interaction model, in which the human factor is the most dominant, because 80 percent of the unsafe acts are caused by a poor mental health condition of the victim at the time of accident. Research on occupational safety and health indicate that persons with depression, anxiety, psychosomatic disorders and type A personality showed a high risk factor for accidents. MMPI examination (Minnesota Multi-phasic Personality Inventory, Ministry of Health version, 1982) of persons involved in accidents indicated that hypochondriasis, psychopathic deviation and schizophrenia posed a high risk for accidents. Accident prevention can be carried out by active and passive measures, or a combination of both. Selection through MMPI examination should be carried out, especially for personnel to be employed in high risk jobs, as in the petroleum industry and aviation.
