A Glance of Ascaris lumbricoides, Linnaeus:1758 (Sekilas mengenai Cacing Gelang (Ascaris lumbricoides, Linnaeus; 1758)
Ascaris lumbricoides is found in 50-100 percent of population in Indonesia especially in suburb areas. The male worm has 15-31 cm length with curly tail, whereas the female is about 20-35 cm and produces around 200,000 eggs per day, with size 60x45 micron. The best environment for the eggs is though soil (clay) with temperature between 25-300 degree C. Since the adult worms take nutrients from human gut, they may cause malnutrition and malabsorption if found in a large number. Clumping of the worms may lead to obstruction of the intestine and causes severe symptoms which may only be relieved by a surgery. At larva stage, this worm causes Loeffler syndrome wich consists of pneumonitis. cough, respiration disorder and spots on X-ray photo which will disappear after 1-2 days. The diagnosis of ascariasis lies on the finding of the parasite eggs in stool or if adult worms appears from nose, anus and mouth. Treatment can be given with anthelmintics.
