Retinoid and Cancer (Retinoid dan Kanker)
Retinoid is a common name for natural or synthetic vitamin A with or without a biologic activity of retinol. During the past several years it was reported that retinoid can prevent or inhibit the malignant growth of tumor cells. Although not completely known, it was also reported that retinoid can reverse the effets of carcinogens in vivo. It was thought that its inhibitive effects on tumor cells due to the increase of physiological body resistance and inhibition of malignant mutant clones. Clinical studies shows that the inhibitive effects of retinoid still obvious when it is given days or weeks after the exposure to carcinogens. This may explain that retinoid works by inhibition on a promoter. Although hypervitaminosis necessitate reduction of the dose of natural retinoid, synthetic retinoid with lower toxicity but high concentration in target tissues may overcome the limitation.
