The Spreading of Typhoid Fever in Surabaya (Penyebaran Penyakit Demam Tifoid di Surabaya)
Typhoid fever is still a health problem in tropic country like Indonesia and in Surabaya the disease is regarded as an endemic. Up to date the spreading pattern of the disease in that city is unknown. To determine the pattern, a cohort study was carried out in 2 subdistricts of Surabaya : Gubeng and Tambaksari for a period of two years (1992-1993). The first year is aimed for observation and case finding and the second year is for monitoring. Samples taken were those who suffered from typhoid fever in the two subdistricts. Diagnostic is established by clinical, laboratory and microbiological examination. Gall culture was done in 1992 and feces culture in 1993. Out of 210 patients with suspected typhoid fever, 51.2 percent had positive gall culture. Those under 30 years was majority of the positive group. Permanent carrier was found 41.2 percent. Typhoid fever can be detected all year round where outbreak usually occured in May up till July. The center area of the disease is in Airlangga village.
