Mannitol Sources of Coconut Pulp Rubbish/Cocos nucifera Linn (Sumber Manitol dari Limbah Ampas Kelapa/Cocos nucifera Linn)
A study has been conducted on the use of by product of coconut pulp as a source of mannitol by reducing and hydrolizing this by product. The purpose of the study was to choose the proper hydrolizing agent in order to obtain a maximum product. It was found that the proper substance to hydrolize the coconut by product was 1 N hydrochloric acid, with a preliminary treatment in four hours. The hydrolysis product, then, was reduced by using hydrogen and palladium chloride as a catalist. From analysis of reduction product, in form of alkohol solution, with gas chromatography method, was obtained; 59.38 percent mannitol out of total carbohydrate or 7.1 percent out of crude sample, 20.47 percent sorbitol out of total carbohydrate or 2.4 percent out of crude sample.
