Some Characteristics of Suicide in Jakarta During the Last Three Decades, 1960-1990
Some characteristics of suicide during the last three decades has been elaborated. In the sixthees hanging was the method of choice of women rather than men. On the contrary, men drank pesticide more often than women. In the seventhese suicide rate of old people dropped, whereas that of yuong adults, 20-29 years group increased from 0.81 to 2.25 per 100,000. In the eightees, men tended to drink pesticide more often rather than hanging. On the contrary, women who previously preferred hanging tended to choose drinking presticide as the method of choice in committing suicide. Closer observations disclosed that suicide was committed by those in the 20-59 age group rather than oven 60 years of age. The first group are wage-earners who are responsible for supporting the young and old age. During the three decades, there is a marked tendency of an increasing suicide rate in Jakarta. The distribution of suicide in the metropolitan area of Jakarta remain unchanged during the last three decades, namely North Jakarta remained to have the highest suicide rate, whereas South Jakarta remained to have the lowest suicide rate. Suicide by age group showed that old age people, except for the seventh decade have the highest suicide rate. During that particular decade, young adults have the highest suicide rate, especially females.
