The Effect of High Dose Vitamin A Supplementation to Lactating Mothers on the Duration of Respiratory Infection among Their Infants
A randomized, double blind, controlled field trial was carried out to evaluate the effect of 100.000 IU vitamin A supplement to lactating mothers on duration of free from acute respiratory infection among their infants. From 6 villages in rural-coastal Java, 382 mothers were randomly assigned as vitamin A group (172 mothers) and control group (210 mothers). The infants were followed-up weekly by midwives during home visits. The occurrence of respiratory infection was also confirmed with local health services morbidity data. Date of first occurence of infantile acute respiratory tract infection after dosing was recorted and duratition of infants free from infection after dosing was counted. Medians duration free from acute respiratory infection were longer in vitamin A group infants than in control group infants. Hazard ratio was 0.79 (0 percent : 0.64-0.97). The provision of high dose vitamin A supplements to loctating mothers appears to be protective for on acute respiratory tract infection among their infents.
