Genetic Disorder and Chromosome Anomaly in Cleft Lip and Palate (Kelainan Genetika dan Anomali Kromosom Penderita Celah Bibir dan Langit-langit)

Cleft lip and palate are genetic disease inherited as multifactorial trait namely the interaction of a number of genes with environmental factor. Cleft lip as a single anomaly without any other malformation usually is not caused by genetic disorders. Cleft lip and palate folowed by other malformation, dermatoglyphics abnormalities and mental retardation tend to be caused by chromosomal abnormalities. In comparison with cleft lip, cleft palate has been correlated more often with genetic disorders. The diagnosis of cleft lip and palate should be taken by careful and multidisciplinary cooperation to ascertain the mode of therapy. Cleft lip and palate cases caused by genetic disorders aside of surgical intervention, genetic counselling should also be provided properly.
