Iodine Analysis on Salt at the Market and the Pattern of Goiter Edemic on Elementary School Student in Malang (Uji Yodium dalam Garam di Pasar dan Gambaran tentang Prevalensi Gondok di Kalangan Siswa Sekolah Dasar di Kotamadya Malang, Jawa Timur)
Mountainous areas were identified as goitre endemic areas. Some efforts such as the distribution of iodated salt, lipiodol injection and distribution of iodine capsuls have been launched by government, but so far the result of this program has not yet successful. The objective of this study was to measure qualitatively the iodine content of marketed salt by using field test kit for iodated salt and to asses its relation to the goitre prevalence among the elementary school students in Kodya Malang, East Java Province. It was found that only 4 out of 7 sachets of salt samples fortified with iodine. The content of iodine in these samples were under Depkes standard. The secondary data shows that the case of goitre is quite high among the elementary school in Kodya Malang, i.e. 14.98 percent in SD Merjosari (n=247), 29.84 percent in SD Merjosari II (n=248) and SD Merjosari IV (n=77). The fortification program should be re-evaluated and further intergated study should be conducted to identify the problems feced and to plan accurately the strategies to improve this program.
